sam__can you specify distribution medium of a CC licensed work? ie is this statement coherent; http://pastebin.ca/86083413:05
*** tvol__ has joined #CC13:12

bovinitynkinkade, holy crap at that home page size!13:12
nkinkadesam__: I'm not aware of any text in the licenses that specifies a distribution medium.13:12
nkinkadebovinity: I was blown away.  I'm actually in the process of reducing her image.13:13
bovinitya "convert -quality 90" would probably drop it to ~150k alone13:13
nkinkadebovinity:  that sounds like a better idea.  i was going to do it in GIMP, but why not use ImageMagick.  good idea.13:14
sam__nkinkade, the copyright holder has said that they only grant us permission to distribute on paper. It seems to me that that is inconsistent with the rights granted under the Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 License.13:14
bovinitynkinkade, maybe consider a friday pow-wow tutorial on file uploads13:14
nkinkadebovinity: can you do it quickly?13:14
bovinityyeah13:14
nkinkadebovinity: that's a good idea, but we need to get the message out to people in the other offices.13:14
bovinityof course13:14
nkinkadesam__: I'm not sure whether they can or can't say that, but as the copyright holder it wouldn't surprise me if they had the right to specifiy that.13:15
*** tvol has quit IRC13:16
*** lionstone has joined #cc13:16
sam__I appriciate that. I can point out that to take that view is incompatable with the right to; to Share ? to copy, distribute and transmit the work13:16
nkinkadesam__: the CC license doesn't waive all rights to the work, it just explicity states what they would or would not like for people to be able to do with it, and if the license doesn't explicitly state that anyone may re-distribute the work in any way they want, then it seem possible to me that they could add that extra stipulation above and beyond the license.13:17
sam__:( OK13:17
nkinkadesam__: if you find some text in the legalcode of the license that you think gives you the right to distribute the work any way you want, then you might want to point this out to them and see how they respond.13:18
nkinkadesam__: you could be right, i'm not sure.  maybe they can't enforce that rule.13:19
sam__OK Thanks13:19
bovinitynkinkade, the problem was jane linked to the large version of hte image on flickr, instead of the medium one. 150k now ;)13:20
nkinkadesam__: Seems to me that in just about every case where there is doubt, contact the copyright holder personally.  better safe than than in a court of law.13:20
nkinkadebovinity: to me, 150KB is still to big, but it's a heck of a lot better.13:20
bovinityindeed.13:21
nkinkadeit would only take a couple 150KB images to have the main page back up to around 1/2 meg.13:21
nkinkadenow were down to a light "313". :)13:22
bovinityhmm, convert shrinks the image down to 90k with no noticable quality change13:22
nkinkadeFor anyone with broadband, that's probably not too too big a deal.  But for anyone without, 313KB could possibly be very very painful.  If someone is viewing it over a modem connection it could take near a minute to load.13:23
nkinkadebovinity: i've got familiarize myself with ImageMagicks command line utilities.13:23
bovinitythere's also "pngcrush" to optimise pngs13:24
nkinkademaybe i need to find an imagemagick tutorial online that goes through some of the most useful commands.  i've got this feeling that imagemagick has loads of obscure tools and options.13:25
bovinity"convert --help" will give you all you never needed to know13:25
nkinkadebovinity: i'm going to install on staging that plugin you found and play around with it.13:30
bovinitycool13:30
nkinkadelooks like it only supports resizing the dimensions of an image, not the byte-size/quality.  i think most people have an idea that it's not good to upload an image that is going to destroy the flow of the page.13:35

nkinkadebovinity: check out staging main page.  i uploaded a 700KB image and it was reasonable reduced to 34KB.13:55
bovinitywoah, nice13:55
nkinkadeusing this plugin: http://www.vestaldesign.com/blog/2007/10/wordpress-image-resizer-plugin.html13:55
nkinkadethe only thing that worries me is that it's version 0.113:56
bovinitydoes that still optimise, even if the image odens't need to be resized?13:56
nkinkadeI need to play with it a little more, but I think it will resize an image to a given max dimention, current 400px wide, but configurable.13:57
* bovinity takes a peek13:58
nkinkadebovinity: take a look at the page without that resizer.13:58
bovinityhuh, it appears to resize on the fly... may not be happy for the server13:58
nkinkadeyeah, i think you're right that it resizes on the fly.14:00
nkinkadeof course, we could just tell people not to put images over a certain size and to never ever ever link to massive images.14:01
bovinityi think having WP resize images would be useful; almost everyone blogging doesn't know how to resize on their own14:02
nkinkadei'm actually in favor of this option over a plugin.  I think it will be mostly effective, as we aren't dealing with random users.  i think most posters will keep that in mind once we make them aware of it.14:02
