shomonjust to get some conversation going here... I've had trouble with the ethics of depending on sites like the internet archive for hosting of cc licensed works. Is there some kind of project going on to try and solve the problem of storage?13:00
bkhlThe ethics?13:01
shomonwell yes I was just thinking that the archive for example could turn around in a while and say it can't host cc works for free, or it could start to be funded by some company that doesn't have good ethical standards (not to rubbish the archive! just an example!)13:05
bkhlSo you just mean there should be more than one archive?13:06
shomondoes that make sense? Hope I'm explaining that properly!13:06
bkhlSure.13:08
bkhlBut I guess most creators will keep their own copies, even when they have submitted their work to the archive.13:08
shomonyes, natural, it's more to ensure availability. I guess if there was the need to create a distributed storage solution then it would get done...13:09
bkhlMaybe FreeNET/GnuNET?13:10
shomonyeah, although for the casual web punters they'd have to be able to get to stuff via simple URLs13:11
bkhlThere could be web/bittorrent front ends for the P2P protocol.13:13
shomonsounds good. Also mainstream music ppl tend to buy webspace and believe that's the only way to host more stuff, so it's raising awareness that they can do it using their own computer connections rather than signing up...13:15
NathanYshomon: I don't think that's a realistic concern given the Archive's articles of incorporation as a not-for-profit...13:15
NathanYbut we are adding the ability to ccPublisher 2 to easily allow other13:15
NathanYproviders to add support for their backends13:15
NathanYso perhaps we'll get a  generic FTP/SFTP backend so that people can self-host directly to their webhost if they like, etc13:15
NathanYdoes that make sense?13:15
bkhlMaybe.13:16
shomonyeah - sounds useful. a few people I know want to release remix/collab works but as they don't know or trust CC licenses they just do it directly on their own web hosts.13:17
bkhlIt might make even more sense to just have a backend that uploads stuff properly tagged to the internet archive.13:17
NathanYwhat do you mean properly tagged?13:17
NathanYshomon: well the app would still ask you to license your work, you'd just have the option of storing it somwhere other than the archive (ie, perhaps ccMixter eventually, etc)13:18
shomonjamendo is a good example of cc friendly stuff using p2p for archival/downloading. for me it's about not depending so much on one central site or source, but making it more distributed... Maybe that's useless now but I think it's important in the long run (i.e 10 years down the line etc!)13:23
NathanYtrue; jamendo is doing some very cool stuff13:24
shomonanyway - nice to chat a bit! have to get back to work now. glad to see this channel!13:28
jugglinxi think it could be nice to have more jamendos... like more local projects...13:44
jugglinxi actually about to make something like this...13:44
bkhlMaybe we should centralise development of a CC content portal that could be rolled out to different countries/regions/languages.14:00
bkhlSort of like Wikipedia.14:00
bkhlOr Indymedia.14:00
NathanYwell that's sort of the idea behind ccHost (the base software of ccMixter)14:02
NathanYa customizable portal anyone can roll out14:02
NathanYand I think Victor is working on a way to aggregate content from ccHost instances14:03

mlinksvajugglinx, yeah, you could make your own cc swag18:56
mlinksvawaglo has been here for time immemorial.  there's probably no need for cchelpbot to do cc weblog notification here, as waglo does it fine.18:58

jugglinxcoz that policy is for webs...19:08
jugglinxso i think inserting the URL is a way of "pointing"...19:08
